Appearing in Court

Video

Court is a formal place. When you go to court, you have to behave and dress in a certain way.

The most important thing to remember is to be respectful to all court staff at all times. Whether you are in court, or in the lobby, you always need to be courteous and considerate. You can expect to be treated the same way.

Part of being considerate is remembering to wait your turn to speak in court. Do not interrupt anyone, and remember to address people politely. Do not let your emotions get the better of you if you disagree with what is being said. Rolling your eyes or outbursts in court will not help your case and will certainly annoy the judge.

Whether you are a man or woman, you need to remember that the way you dress says a lot about you in court. One way to show the court that you are taking the matter seriously is to be well groomed and well dressed. You do not want to look like you just rolled out of bed or are going out for a night on the town.

Instead, you should wear clean, business casual clothes when going to court. You should not wear low-cut tops, muscle shirts, shorts, or anything that shows too much skin. Your goal is to make a good impression.

If you have a lawyer representing you, the best thing to do is let them do the talking for you during your trial. All you need to do is be attentive and respectful. Look at the person talking, and remember not to have any outbursts.
