Traffic offenses in Ohio are criminal offenses. Like other criminal offenses, traffic violations follow criminal procedure. Traffic violations fall into one of four categories:
Certain minor traffic offenses are waiverable offenses. This means that you can plead guilty, pay the ticket in full, and avoid going to court. If your ticket is checked “Personal Appearance Required” (bottom right hand of ticket) your ticket is not waiverable. This means, if you wish to contest a traffic violation, you will need to go to court. For information on going to court to dispute a traffic violation, see the Criminal section.
