If a person charged with a traffic offense does not appear in court when required, or does not pay the fine for the offense on time, the court will wait 30 days before notifying the BMV that the person is under a “license forfeiture” suspension. The BMV will notify that person by mail to let them know that they are under suspension.
When a person is placed under a license forfeiture suspension, that person cannot apply for or renew a driver’s license, temporary permit, or commercial driver’s license, or register a vehicle in his or her name. The person also cannot drive and will be charged with driving under suspension if caught driving.
A license forfeiture will end when the person:
- Appears in court to answer to the charge(s)
- Pays the court imposed fine
- Gets a license forfeiture release from the clerk of court for a $65 fee
- Files the release with the OBMV
- Pays the OBMV a $25 fee for the reinstatement
